What The Frock! Comedy is an all-female comedy night, which is based in Bristol but has also put on events in (so far) London, Manchester and Exeter. The moon is the limit!
The idea for the comedy club came from journalist Jane Duffus in January 2012, who launched the first comedy event in May of the same year – which sold out more than 200 seats well in advance.
Jane was inspired to start an all-female comedy club after realising how difficult it was to see female comedians anywhere. She did some research that showed for every 48 comedians booked on one night in the UK, on average only four of them will be women. She said: “That’s just not good enough!”
In January 2013, after three pilot events, What The Frock! Comedy was launched as a business and began a sell-out monthly residency in Bristol. And in March 2012, What The Frock! Comedy was not only profiled on BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour, but also produced a comedy showcase at the Southbank Centre in London as part of the international Women of the World Festival.
Since then, What The Frock! has been a part of the first ever Women in Comedy Festival in Manchester, launched a national Open Mic Award (one of only two all-female comedy competitions in the UK), been featured in a great deal of the national press, and Jane has taken up a regular spot on BBC Radio Bristol.
In addition to the comedy events, Jane is keen to use the profile of What The Frock! to support good causes, and has so far put on several events supporting Bristolian women’s charity One25, and the Whiteladies Picture House campaign.
Earlier in October 2013, What The Frock! celebrated its 20th comedy show, with a night at its new regular home: the Art Deco Mauretania Bar & Lounge in Bristol.
Jane’s said her goal with What The Frock! is “to highlight that women are funny, and to prove that comedy by women isn’t just for female audiences. Far from it… we now enjoy about 50/50 women and men in our audience, which is just what I wanted.”
