I am Abigail the writer of No Surrender and this is a project I have written for my final year studying Film and Television Production at the University of York.
“An elder Victorian wardress tries to discourage a young and naive prisoner from her fight for women’s suffrage, but her callous ways only fuels her fight.”
This was a story that I had been developing since the summer. I had noticed a trend that student films would revolve around WW1 and although this is great, it is a monumental time in our history, I always think well so was the suffrage movement, but people rarely like to represent these courageous women who battled an oppressive patriarchal society.
The Crew (from Left to Right): Adrian (Director), Ania (DoP), Katie (Sound Director), Manuel-Benito (Producer), Sunniva (1st AD), Jamie (Editor) and Abigail (Writer)
Since the film has been green-lit by our university, who has some amazing facilities to help with the films production, I have had a fantastic team of 6 join me on this historical venture. We have been really busy in pre-production and managed to secure the Old Dean Road Prison in Scarborough as our location. This will be used to represent the notorious Holloway prison, which was central to the suffragette campaign.
The film is still very much relevant today. Society once viewed women as hysterical and as a gender who lacked the intelligence to use their votes wisely. Now we have the votes and women are proving their strength and their worth all around the globe. Today we have people who are fighting for the rights to marry the person they love but they can’t because the person they love are of the same sex and society tells them that it is wrong. I would like the film to demonstrate how efforts in trying to change society for the better does in fact pay off with the courage and conviction to fight for what is right.
