Launched in 2011, Female Arts online magazine focuses on women in the arts as a response to gender inequality. Run by Editors Wendy Thomson and Sophie Porter who met at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the magazine promotes women in performing, visual and literary arts.
Women are not equally represented in the arts – statistically only 17% of playwrights, 23% of directors and 35% of actors are women.*
Our review team are interested in productions with the focus on female creatives including theatre, exhibitions, film, literature, dance, books, TV, comedy and music. We publish information about upcoming shows, interview inspirational women and feature companies and events.
In 2013 Female Arts published 600 articles and reviewed nearly 200 productions at venues including the National Theatre, National Theatre Scotland, Southbank Centre, Royal Court, V&A, Tate Modern, Theatre 503, Arcola, Ovalhouse, Oxford Playhouse, Reading Hexagon and Birmingham New Alexandra.
