Beauty In Older Women
An Edo Zollo Photography Project
@ Letchworth Arts Centre
9th – 29th September 2014
After the exhibition opened to widespread acclaim in London, with rave reviews in the national press and on television, it is a real treat to announce that the exhibition is on the road, fist stop the gorgeous city Letchwork. From September 9th-29th, at the Letchworth Arts Centre in Letchworth, you will be able to see ten photographs of some amazing women.
The photographs, taken in quite harsh urban settings, feature the women, who are not professional models, clothed only in a white sheet. Edo explains that ‘the photos challenge the stereotyped view of ageing women as unattractive and ‘past it’. The ten beautiful women, aged from 67 to 79 show their bodies and their characters proudly’. Each photograph is accompanied by a statement from the women participants. Hazel (79) writes in hers: ‘I’m doing something I have never done before. At my age, you have done most things, what a joy to find yourself involved in a new experience!’ Margaret (67) says: ‘Do not accept society’s evaluation! Be proud of who you are, expect to be noticed and look for attention. We deserve it and no matter who we are, we have contributed and should not be ignored or set aside.’
As an illustration of the value of this project to the women involved, one of them, Val, was interviewed for Good Housekeeping. She described how, having been widowed recently, meeting Edo and the others and being photographed contributed to her feeling better about herself and moving on with her life.
The exhibition is supported by Hanoverr who provide housing to older people, and who have also provided four of the models!
Edo Zollo works and lives in London, you can see more of his photography featured in Time Out London’s listings magazine. He and some of the wonderful women from the project will be attending the private view of the exhibition in September so if you visit, do say hello!
