Many thanks to Ruth Pearce on the FWSA Mailing List for drawing our attention to this report on the work of Athena SWAN; please see below for further details from Ruth:
Earlier this year I emailed about a project I was undertaking at Warwick’s Centre for the Study of Women and Gender with my colleagues Maria do Mar Pereira and Nickie Charles. Alongside putting together an Athena SWAN submission for the Sociology department, we wanted to collectively think through the benefits and drawbacks of the scheme.
We spoke to numerous people from this list, and held a workshop in February.
In the spirit of collegiality and collaboration that animated the workshop, I’ve written up a report of the event that I hope will be helpful in conversations about Athena SWAN and similar schemes across our various institutions.
The report includes reflections and insights from the Certifying Equality event, including:
- Background to Athena SWAN
- Athena SWAN as a catalyst for change
- The contradictions of equality accreditation
- Proposals for change
- Presentation summaries
It can be found here: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/
If you find this helpful in your work, please do feel free to distribute it widely!
Best wishes,
Ruth
